Elimu - The Little Book of Knowledge
Aspire Black Suffolk CIC is delighted and proud to provide the first edition of our Black History education book. Entitled ‘Elimu – Little Book on Knowledge’, the book is packed with activities, challenges, tasks and fabulous facts for children and young people. Elimu is a Kiswahili (or Swahili) term meaning ‘knowledge’
Created by us and in partnership with the Association for Suffolk Museums and Suffolk County Council, Elimu includes previously untold Black history stories discovered in research conducted by the Council in local museums in Suffolk.
Inspired by the record-breaking, award-winning exhibition, Power of Stories, which features three original costumes from Marvel Studios’ Black Panther ground-breaking movie, the book offers stories of Black ‘heroes’ from Suffolk’s community which we hope will help children and young people to connect with their county’s diversity and enhance their learning experience.
We have also included national Black heroes such as Stormzy and Jamal Edwards, and historic international Black figures whose amazing stories must be shared to extra inspiration!
The content ties into the curriculum, offering the opportunity to learn effectively. To support learning styles we have included images, text and QR codes to engaging audio and video, which has been produced with local people.
At the back of the book you will find a certificate which can be copied and given out upon completion of all the tasks.
If you would like to add to the Elimu experience, we encourage you to take children and young people to visit the Power of Stories tour and visit local museums.
If you have your own Black history tale that you would like to offer your local museum, please contact us – that story may feature in our forthcoming interactive version of Elimu or even in a future Power of Stories exhibition!
If you have any queries or are interested in any training in teaching Black history, please contact our co-directors, Ellisha Soanes: ellisha@aspireblacksuffolk.org.uk or Tonia Wilson: tonia@aspireblacksuffolk.org.uk. Their biographies are here.
We hope you thoroughly enjoy teaching with Elimu!
