1. The Woman King (2022)

2. Till (2022)

Heartbreaking film recounts the story of Mamie Till-Mobley and her pursuit of justice for her son, Emmett Till, who was lynched in Mississippi in 1955.


3. Judas and the Black Messiah (2021)

Explores the betrayal of Fred Hampton, chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party in late-1960s Chicago.

5. Queen & Slim (2019)

Directed by Melina Matsoukas and written by Lena Waithe, this film tells the story of a couple whose first date takes a sudden turn after a fatal encounter with the police. It’s a visually stunning road movie that delves into race, love, and survival in America.


6. Black Panther (2018)

Family favourite A Marvel groundbreaking film reimagines African excellence in the fictional world of Wakanda. It’s a cultural milestone that celebrates Black empowerment, leadership, and heritage.


7. If Beale Street Could Talk (2018)

An adaptation of James Baldwin’s novel is a moving love story set against the backdrop of racial injustice. It’s a beautifully and emotional journey of love, hope, and the fight against systemic oppression.


8. Moonlight (2016)

Directed by Barry Jenkins, this Academy Award-winning film tells the tender, emotional story of a young Black man navigating his identity and sexuality while growing up in a rough neighborhood in Miami.


9. Selma (2014)

The 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches led by Martin Luther King Jr. It’s an inspiring reminder of the struggles and victories of the Civil Rights Movement.


10. The Harder They Fall (2021)

Produced by Jay-Z and directed by Jeymes Samuel, this revisionist Western features a predominantly Black cast, reclaiming the space of the Western genre to center Black characters as strong, complex figures rather than stereotypical sidekicks or villains.


12. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020)

Produced by Denzel Washington, celebrates the life of Ma Rainey, a pioneering Black blues singer, reclaiming her space as a cultural icon in a male-dominated industry.


13. Get Out (2017)

Scary - horror thriller flips traditional narratives by tackling systemic racism through a lens of psychological horror.


16. Miss Juneteenth (2020)

A heartfelt story about a former beauty queen guiding her daughter through a local pageant reclaims the narrative of Black motherhood. It presents Black women’s struggles and aspirations in a tender, relatable way, while celebrating cultural traditions.


18. Daughters of the Dust (1991)

Directed by Julie Dash, this groundbreaking film was one of the first widely distributed films by a Black woman. It tells the story of Gullah women on the Sea Islands and their African heritage, reclaiming African-American history and culture with a deeply spiritual and visually stunning portrayal.
